FAQs

Why Brainastics?

There are many reasons why parents chose our program, not least because this method of learning has been proven as the most effective way for your children to learn to read and write.

We use the internationally renowned program ‘Jolly Phonics’, which Today Tonight (March 11th 2008) referred to as “a system that is revolutionising the way Australian children are learning to read and write.”

It is also cost effective and your child will have fun learning.

Our teachers are enthusiastic, qualified and experienced primary teachers - as well as mothers of pre-schoolers!We work with parents, so they can follow-up on what is being taught.  We can provide practical activities to enjoy at home ... not just advice.

Our classes accommodate up to 12 students per group.

We continually revise work from previous weeks in order to reinforce concepts and learning.

Is my child too young?

It depends on your child. We cater for kindergarten aged children and will give you an honest assessment as to whether we think your child is ready, or would benefit from waiting.

Our program has been carefully created and researched to teach young children to read and write in a way that is relevant and fun for them.

How does it work? What exactly do they learn?

Children are taught 42 sounds which include the 26 letters of the alphabet and 16 diagraphs such as /ee/ or /ie/. The children are taught a new sound each session and taught how to blend the sounds to form words, as well as listen for sounds within words in order to write them.

Will this be 'untaught' once they get to school?

No, this method is easily translatable with any other teaching methods. We even teach the Victorian Modern Cursive Script that children learn at school.

In fact one Prep teacher even told us that our Brainastics kids are the first children “to come to my class knowing their sounds properly!”

What should I be doing at home to help my child?

Reading nightly to your child is very important. It’s a fantastic way of developing a love of books, improving vocabulary and teaching them how a book works (e.g. reading left to write - top to bottom).

At Brainastics we run an Information evening for parents every 6 months, as well as provide activity ideas for home throughout the term.
