Brainastics is available to PD your staff on Synthetic Phonics.
Proven to be the best way to teach children to read and write.
The National Curriculum is placing a strong focus on teaching phonics in the Early Years of primary school. Whilst most schools are currently teaching an analytical phonics program the new expectation is for an improved system called synthetic phonics.
Are you and your colleagues aware of the difference between the two?
Do you know the difference between a consonant blend and a digraph?
Are you like most schools in Victoria where 20-30% of your Prep students are struggling to learn to read?
The word ‘synthetic’ means to synthesis sounds together. Whereas currently most schools are teaching the 26 letters of the alphabet in Prep, a sound a week, and looking mostly at initial sounds in words, a synthetic phonics program looks at the 44 sounds in the English language, up to 5 sounds a week, and studies them at the beginning, middle and end of words. It also specifically teaches students to put the sounds together to make words (blending), as well as break words up into their sounds in order to write them (segmenting).
As well as being scientifically proven to give children an 11 month head start, it has also proven effective when teaching dyslexic children to read and write.
